Vancouver Island Fishing Reports

Fishery is still strong.. [12. Jul. 2007 - 12:11]

Saltwater Report:

Fishing over the last few days has been almost non-existant with the strong Northwest

winds prevailing.
Up to this past weekend there have been fish taken at Clark Rk, Five Fingers, and the

Brickyard. Depths have been ranging from 80' in the morning to 140' in the afternoon.  Gear

choices have been much of the same with the #142 pickle green hootchy and a gold Betsy

flasher being the hot combo on the Doghouse.
The Lingcod fishery has been great with a number of fish in the 20 to 30 lb. class being

taken at Snake Is. and south of Dodds Narrows.  Careful where you fish at Snake as the

R.C.A. extends to the south end of the Island.

Freshwater Report:

The trout fishing will slow now that we are into the hot weather.  Fish early mornings and

evenings for best results.  Deep will be the key to success as the top layer of water will

get to warm for fish to feed in.
Bass fishing is still in full swing with Spider, Quesnell, and Westwood all producing great

catches.-cheers dirty

Fish was great this past weekend!! [27. Jun. 2007 - 01:22]

Saltwater reports for:

Eastcoast Vancouver Island:

Nanaimo, this past weekend saw some great fishing. The Silva Bay Salmon Derby was a great time had by all. The top fish weighed in over the two day event was a respectable 24.6 lbs. Many other fish were weighed in with a 20.2 lb. fish taking second. 20 lbs. took third.

Seemed like almost all of the local spots were taking fish. The Grande, Whale bone beach, through the gap to the cannery, Five Fingers, Hudson Rocks, and Neck Pt. were all producing great action. Hudson Rks., through to Clarke rk. produced well for the Doghouse. We figure the largest was about 18lbs.

For us the splatter back won hands down with the punk skunk and Bavarian Secret in the spoons, were also great producers.

Look for some great action to be had close to home over the next few weeks.

Fishing is Great!!! [19. Jun. 2007 - 15:14]

Saltwater:

East Coast Vancouver Island-

Salmon fishing remains excellent in our local waters with fish being weighed in daily. The last few days have seen some impressive fish hitting the docks. A 28 lb. fish was taken at the Grande on Friday and reports of a 32 lb. were confirmed at the Fingers. The fish are still sitting a little deep with 110 to 140 ft. being the magic depths. The cop car, nasty boy, and the Bavarian coyotes are all working well. The herring are growing fast so a 5.0 or even a 6.0 inch spoon will be worth a try.
Lingcod are now open with a one fish per day limit. They must be 65 cm. in length to be legal. As well there is retention for one rockfish during this lingcod opening. Be careful and check to see where the R.C.A.’s are.

West Coast Vancouver Island-

The doghouse just returned from a week over in Bamfield. Only one word comes to mind “ AWSOME “. The fishing was on fire inshore with multiple double headers over the four days of fishing. Meares Bluff, Swale Rk. and Cree were all producing fish up to 17 lbs. Look for the larger migratory fish to move in any day as there are reports of great catches up towards Tofino.
The offshore has yet to start producing any real numbers making it almost  pointless to waste the gas getting out there.
Anchovy in a clear green Rhys teaser with a grn/glo hotspot was the slayer.
On the halibut front, there are fish around the 7 to 10 mile mark. The Doghouse took an impressive 90 lb. beauty off of Sail rk. on Thursday. We also messed with another lunker for about an hour and a half before my guy’s arms could not take anymore. I’ve messed with some pretty big flatty’s over the years and when I took over on this one it owned me. Just to have known how big would have been enough. Oh well…Cheers dirty

Opportunities on the fresh and salt.. [ 8. Jun. 2007 - 15:56]

Saltwater fishing:

There has not been a lot of feedback from our local anglers as it looks as if everyone is taking a bit of a break this week. Monday saw reports of fish being taken at Neck pt. Anchovy was the bait of choice in the clear green teaser. There is a lot of small herring around so make sure to have those spoons shined up.
Also look to use anything in the glo, especially if you are going to fish the east side of Gabriola as the Fraser fills the straight up with silt. Expect that water to be around for the next week or so. This morning produced a nice 27 lb. Chinook for one of our local anglers while fishing the Neck pt. area. It was taken at 120 ft. on a Cop Car Coyote.

Freshwater fishing:

On the local lakes one can expect to have great success using a number of the methods. Westwood sounds like the best bet with trout being reported to 3 lbs. Gangtroll and worm, Sinking rapala’s in the silver/black and rainbow, and small spinners are all great choices. Some of the larger lakes on the island are also starting to fish well. The Nanaimo lks. chain has been great with second lk. and fourth lk. both producing some quality fish.
One should not overlook the sea-run cutthroat fishery as we see the smolts leaving their natal streams. A lot of the time the freshet will push these little guy’s right out of the system.
Mid June also brings the first push of summer steelhead into our rivers. These fish, when hooked early in the season are the hardest of fighting fish to be had. The Stamp river over in Port Alberni sees a larger return than most streams with a lot of opportunities for a fin clipped fish for the BBQ. Unlike their winter cousins, summer steelhead are very aggressive towards hardware as the water gets a little warmer. Do not forget to bring some of your terminal gear like your corkies and spin n glo’s. Drift fishing is still one of the most popular methods to take theses beauties.
Stop by the shop for any info or gear anytime.

The DOG days of summer are here... [30. May. 2007 - 11:52]
Saltwater fishing:

Calm days and hot weather are finally upon us. The weekend saw average to good fishing for Chinooks in our local waters.  Along with that came one of the largest red tide blooms that I have ever seen. It literally looks like tomato soup out there. On another note though, the fish do not seem to be bothered by it. The Doghouse was on the water Tuesday evening fishing Pipers to Neck pt. At first we started down deep in hopes of getting away from the bloom only to find that the fish were in the upper column. We started hooking fish at 75 to 85 ft in 120 ft of water.. The Army Truck hootchy with a green/glo flasher was the only thing we could get fish to take. It seems as though these fish are changing up their gear choices every couple of days. Do not overlook the spoons in the Cop Car, Green glo and the gypsy Glo/kgrn/Cerisestripe. There is also a lot of 3to4” herring around so give the anchovy a try as well.

Freshwater:

The trout fishing will really take off with the hot weather tripping off numerous hatches. All of the local lakes should be producing quality trout to 2 lbs. On the bass scene, Quesnel, Westwood, Long and Spider a little to the north of us have been producing fish to 5lbs. Another quality fishery is the Taylor and Elk rivers for great dry fly action while the trout leave the lakes to spawn. Remember these are fly only catch and release fisheries.
